SASSA War Veterans Grant [2024] – Eligibity Criteria

The SASSA war veterans grant is available to South Africans who served in World War II (1939 – 1945) or the Korean War (1950 – 1953). To qualify for this grant, an applicant must be 60 years old or disabled and not receiving any other social assistance. The grant is determined by a means test, which evaluates the applicant’s income, assets, and other financial circumstances.

Before applying for the war veterans grant, make sure that you meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents to qualify for the grant.
  • You must be a resident of South Africa.
  • If you are 60 years old or disabled, you are eligible.
  • You shouldn’t get any other type of social grant for your personal expenses.
  • In a war like the Korean War or the Second World War, you should have participated.
  • The state should not provide you with any care.
  • Both you and your spouse must comply with the requirements of the means test.
  • If you are single, your annual income cannot exceed R96 840 (R8 070 per month). Being married, the collective annual income must not be higher than R193 680 (R16 140 per month).
  • When you’re single, your assets shouldn’t exceed R1 372 800. Your collective assets should not exceed R2 745 600 when you are married.

Documents Requirement to Apply For War Veterans Grant

War Veterans Grant applicants must bring these documents (originals or certified copies) to the SASSA office:

  • Documents proving your war service, such as a certificate.
  • You must have the original barcoded ID (identity document) with 13 digits.
  • If applicable, a medical assessment report must be provided as proof of your disability.
  • A current address proof.
  • You must provide proof of your marital status:
  • Marriage Certificate: You need this if you’re married.
  • Divorce Decree: the legal end of a marriage.
  • In the case of a deceased spouse, a death certificate is required.
  • In case you are married, you should provide proof of all your assets and income.

How to Apply for the SASSA War Veterans Grant?

You can apply for the SASSA war veterans grant in the following steps:

  • SASSA Office: Find the SASSA office nearest you.
  • Go to the SASSA office: Ask for the application form for the War Veterans Grant.
  • Application form: Fill out the form with your information.
  • Form Completion: Please submit all necessary documents, such as discharge certificates or the ‘blue book’ if employed.
  • Application Submission: A completed application and supporting documents must be submitted to the SASSA official.
  • Application confirmation: Your application will be reviewed by SASSA after you wait for it to process.
  • Grant Reward: Your grant application will be notified of the decision and you can check your status.

What is the Processing Time for the SASSA War Veterans Grant Application?

There is a 3 months processing time for war veterans‘ grant applications. Payments begin once your application is approved. Your grant payment will be processed once your application has been approved and the application has been processed. You will receive a letter from SASSA explaining the reasons behind the decision and how to appeal it if your application is not accepted.

SASSA War Veterans Grant Payment Process

If your War Veterans grant application is approved, you will begin receiving payments from the date you applied. As SASSA does not have any fixed dates, they release the payment schedule every month. So, check out the latest SASSA Payment dates. 

Payments will be made to you by SASSA in one of three ways (you must choose one):

  • Your bank account or Postbank account will be credited directly. You may be charged a service fee by the banks.
  • There are SASSA-partnered retail outlets such as Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, Checkers, Usave, and Spar where you can withdraw your grant payment in cash.
  • A specific institution (e.g. an old-age home, a disability center, or a non-profit organization).

Grant payments through a bank account

The following documents must be submitted if you wish to receive your grant payments through a bank account: SASSA Grant Consent Form.

  • ID cards, driving licenses, or birth certificates can serve as proof of identity.
  • Your bank account number should be in your name.
  • Bank statement showing your name and account number for three months.

At any time, you can update or change your bank account details by filling out a form at the welfare office. Once the verification is complete, the payments will be received through the new payment method from the following month. You can nominate someone to collect payments on your behalf if you are too old to collect grants yourself.

Means Test For The SASSA War Veterans Grant

As part of the SASSA Means test, applicants can submit income, assets, and other financial information to ensure they have a deserving chance of receiving the grant.

Income Limits:

  • Individuals should not earn more than R96,840 per year.
  • An individual’s combined income with his or her spouse cannot exceed R193 680.

Assets Limits:

  • Assets should not exceed R137 2800 for a single individual.
  • A married couple’s overall assets should not exceed R274 5600.

A means test is used to determine financial eligibility for each grant type.
