What is SASSA?
SASSA stands for Social Security Agency of South Africa. This national agency was created by the South African government in April 2005 to administer South Africa’s social security system on behalf of the Department of Social Development (DSD). If you have already applied for a grant then you should need to check your SASSA Status today to stay updated. There are several types of grants which include:
Child Support Grant
To qualify for the grant, you must be the primary caregiver of the child/children concerned. Citizens, permanent residents, and refugees from South Africa are eligible to apply. South Africa must be your home country and the country of your child. The child/children must have been born after 31 December 1993. The means test requires you and your spouse to meet certain requirements. State institutions cannot care for children.
Care Dependency Grant
You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee to qualify for the grant. A resident of South Africa is required for both you and your child. The child must be under 18 years old. An assessment or medical report confirming a permanent, severe disability is required. The means test requires you and your spouse to meet certain requirements (except for foster parents).
Foster Child Grant
If you are interested in applying for the grant, you will need to be a foster parent. Applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees. Both you and the child must reside in South Africa. Foster parents must continue to care for the child.
Disability Grant
Individuals with disabilities who are unable to work and earn an income are eligible for the Disability Grant. To determine eligibility, applicants must undergo a medical examination.
Grant-In-Aid
To qualify for the grant you must receive a grant for older persons. They must also be eligible for a disability grant or a war veteran’s grant, and require another person to attend full-time. Due to physical or mental disabilities. The beneficiary cannot be cared for in an institution that receives a subsidy from the state.
Older Person’s Grant
The Old Age Grant is available to South Africans who are over 60 and do not receive another social grant. Senior citizens receive financial assistance to cover their living expenses.
War Veterans Grant
Veterans of the South African National Defence Force and former non-statutory forces who participated in certain wars and military operations are eligible to apply for this grant.
Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD)
To qualify for the COVID-19 SRD Grant, you must be a South African citizen or permanent resident. You must be a South African resident and at least 18 years old. Secondly, you must be unemployed.

Can Anyone Apply For a SASSA Grant?
There is a misconception that SASSA grants are only available to the elderly. Grants can be applied for by a variety of people. Do not hesitate if you are eligible for one of these grants then you should apply immediately. These grants are not offered by private bodies but they are administered under the Government Social Assistance Act of 2004 and its regulations.
